Find a Reputable Breeder
Your guide to finding a well-bred Shikoku Ken from an ethical breeder.
The Shikoku is a rare breed, and finding a reputable breeder takes patience. Our recommended breeders are committed to health testing, proper socialization, and breed preservation.
What to Look for in a Breeder
A responsible breeder is your partner in raising a healthy, well-adjusted Shikoku. Here's what sets great breeders apart.
Health Testing
Reputable breeders test for genetic conditions common in the breed, including hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and eye conditions.
Socialization
Good breeders expose puppies to various stimuli, people, and experiences during the critical socialization period.
Contract & Support
Ethical breeders provide a written contract and remain available for support throughout the dog's life.
Breeding Goals
Responsible breeders have clear goals for their program and can explain why they chose a particular pairing.
Club-Recommended Breeders
All our recommended breeders come directly from the breeders recommended by the American Shikoku Ken Club, who go through a rigorous vetting process and abide by their code of ethics.
Red Flags to Avoid
Protect yourself and the breed by avoiding breeders who show these warning signs. Breeders are good at marketing in the digital age and can say anything, so be careful.
